Thanks for the update Roy... Not too bad, sounds about what everywhere else reports for conditions. Just too bad it's already Feb!

I doubt it will stay for another week+, looks like we're parked till the next storm.

Tim, Justin, Mario and I rode Sherman Pass on Sunday 1/29/2012. This was our maiden voyage on the white stud this season. We rode over 60 miles boondocking mostly off trails 101, 102, 103, 104, and 117. The Yurt is fine out in the sun and has a sign-in sheet on the table. Please sign in when you ride to ensure we keep our funding. We rode to the Peak and the ridge north of 102 to Siretta. There was just over 2 feet at the pass and about 32 inches up on the peak. The best riding was near the peak and off the 102. Watch for the two trees down on the main trail (101) past the 104 and before the Yurt. There are also several trees down on 104 that you have to go off trail to pass. Keep praying for more snow!

The beanfeed at sugarloaf area has been cancelled due to lack of snow. The beanfeed on the Sherman side may need to be rescheduled because it conflicts with Snofest at Pondorosa.

Mammoth was real nice on Tuesday. Still fresh from the storm and hardly any tracks yet. About 1-2 ft at town, 3-4 ft up high. 395 and east is trail only, some off trail up higher by Bald Mt., but still gotta be careful. Single-track non-groomed trails were fun. with 1-2 ft and some deeper wind drifts, and no other tracks. Cold and powdery in the AM, but gets warm in afternoon and snow gets heavy. Good for base building, but we need way more. Gonna go back up there on Sat. Let us know how Sherman is Roy.

I'm hoping too, we had a ton of snow this time last year (the sad thing is that I missed half the season due to surgery)! We even delayed our annual Montana trip this year because of the lack of snow up there too.

Yeah, it'd be quite excellent if you let me know when you have a chance to head up there - its less than 2 hours for me so I'm game almost any weekend. I'll send you my phone number so feel free to give me a call after the snow flies.

We're all itchin! No riding in CA yet, pretty much have to take a road trip way north (ID, WY, CO) and even then, snow totals are low. Check out the Sherman web cam, just small patches are left... there was more snow there last July 4th!
Looks like the wet pattern might be back, starting next week and hopefully into Feb. I don't have much faith in the snow gods so far this winter, but my fingers are crossed.... so we'll see.
As soon as we get a couple feet, I'll be up at Sherman that weekend. Will need a couple storms for a base to get off trail, but I'd take just a road ride right about now!
And like most on here, come on up, always looking for more to ride with!

Hey folks, I'm new to the forum but have talked to some of you in the past. Does anyone know of any riding yet? I was at Mammoth skiing a few weeks ago and they hardly had enough after making snow every night. I've been really itching to get out!

When it does snow, I am always game to ride with anyone looking for another person. I have a Summit 800 so I tend to like boondocking over straight trails. My place of choice is Sherman pass since I live in Cal City but will go wherever the fun is!

9 DEC 8PM HANFORD
A WEAK PACIFIC LOW PRESSURE AREA WILL DROP SOUTH ALONG THE WEST
COAST SUNDAY...REACHING THE CENTRAL CALIFORNIA COAST SUNDAY NIGHT.
THE LOW WILL STRENGTHEN A BIT AS IT NEARS THE SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA
COAST...BRINGING RAIN AND HIGHER ELEVATION SNOW INTO KERN
COUNTY...WITH PRECIPITATION CHANCES DECREASING SUBSTANTIALLY FROM
FRESNO COUNTY NORTH.

THIS WILL NOT BE A PARTICULARLY COLD STORM...BUT SNOW LEVELS COULD
DROP TO THE PASSES IN KERN COUNTY MONDAY. THERE IS EVEN A CHANCE
OF RAIN MIXING WITH SNOW AT TIMES IN THE HIGH DESERTS DOWN TO
ABOUT 3000 FEET.

THERE IS SOME POTENTIAL FOR LOCALLY HEAVY RAIN AND SNOW. IF YOU
HAVE TRAVEL PLANS INTO OR OUT OF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA MONDAY AND
TUESDAY...BE SURE TO CHECK THE LATEST WEATHER AND ROAD CONDITIONS
BEFORE DEPARTING. IF YOU LIVE IN THE SOUTHERN SIERRA SOUTH OF
SEQUOIA PARK OR THE TEHACHAPI MOUNTAINS...YOU SHOULD PREPARE FOR
WINTER WEATHER CONDITIONS. WINTER WEATHER WATCHES OR ADVISORIES
MAY BE NEEDED. SINCE THIS WILL BE A RATHER LARGE AREA OF LOW
PRESSURE...WINDS ARE NOT EXPECTED TO BE AN ISSUE IN THE MOUNTAINS
OR DESERTS.

Not much snow.. 6" at 8K turnout, 10-12" at Vista and down 102 trail. Put up a new snow pole at the Vista and some supplies to the Yurt. The yurt (in it's new spot) is ready for winter, Bob has some signs at the turnoff from Sherman Rd. now and the firewood shed is stocked.. also has a porta pottie there too.
Warm during the day is exposing the asphalt fast, so just squeezed a run in... alot will be gone by weeks end. Hopefully get some storms soon and get the season going!

We changed the lower drive thru gate as we were leaving and will change the lower ATV gate lock next Sunday as it had an previous years lock on it and we didn't have the key with us. When we left at about 12:30 this afternoon it was snowing.

My Jeep would be buried in the winter.

There's where we usually go up and play.

And this is where we go down and then climb back up to the top of the pass.

I'm not used to seeing all this green up at Sherman. It certainly is a beautiful place in the winter and in the summer.

On September 10th the Sherman Yurt was moved from Paloma Meadow to Curlis. The turn-off to the yurt is on the same side of the road. It’s 2 miles from Paloma Meadow (the old location) towards the Pass and 1/2 mile past trail 104 on the right when going from the Pass towards Blackrock. The area is much larger and provides a large parking area for a busy day of riding. If looking on Google Earth the coordinates are 36'01'6.63"N 118'20'35.7"W at 8665'. This is also a popular play area and will provide a great place for the Sherman Bean Feed. This should take care of the snow load on the Yurt as it's out in the open. We were able to finish the entire Yurt including the stove installation and new dome and siding. Thanks to the Forest Service Bob Frenes and his crew along with Sugarloafers Roy and Justin Allard and Southland Snow Riders Mike Garland and his son Jesse for all the hard work.

The forest service was able to get the Yurt taken down and loaded on the trailer. They will be moving it in the morning and we will now be able to meet them at Curlis Meadow. This is the first dirt road on the right hand side after passing the 103 and 104 on the left hand side. See you there.
