http://ca.news.yahoo.com/s/capress/100314/national/avalanche_dead_1

REVELSTOKE, B.C. - What many feared would be one of the worst death tolls ever in the B.C. backcountry appears to be an almost miraculous story of survival.

But with the relief at a major catastrophe averted came anger from some in the snowmobiling community who say the two killed - and the real potential there could have been dozens more - should never have happened.

"That was shear stupidity," said Brandyn Mears, who works at Powder Petes snowmobile rental shop in Revelstoke.

He was referring to witnesses who reported watching the avalanche trigger when a few people attending the annual Big Iron Shoot-Out began high-marking, racing their snowmobiles up the side of the mountain to see who can leave the highest mark and get down safely.

Dozens of sledders stopped to watch from what they thought was a safe distance.

It wasn't.

A towering wall of snow with the force of concrete came tumbling down the mountainside near where a group of 200 was gathered, sweeping spectators and their snowmobiles with it.

Police wouldn't directly say it was the high-markers who caused the avalanche.

But those in the snowmobiling community had little doubt.

"It's guys with the most expensive sleds out to prove who's best, not to prove who's the safest," said Mears, who noted the first mistake was being out on a snowmobile in avalanche conditions deemed dangerous in the first place.

When "a lot of people were ignoring the avalanche risk ... something like this happens," he said. "It's the few bad apples who ruin it for the rest."

The massive slide sent 31 to the hospital, one in critical condition. The death toll could easily have risen beyond two but for the quick rescue efforts of fellow snowmobilers.

RCMP say they have accounted for all those known to have been on remote Boulder Mountain, in the Monashee Mountains, when the deadly avalanche tumbled down Saturday afternoon.

After searching for abandoned vehicles and canvassing hotels in the Revelstoke area, Cpl. Dan Moskaluk said there was nobody that RCMP know of left unaccounted for, and no new reports of missing people.

"All the persons we had on these lists of names have been accounted for and have been checked off the lists," Moskaluk told reporters.

"We're in a far different situation than we were just over 24 hours ago with a report of over 200 people being possibly affected by this slide. We're very fortunate, albeit though we do have two fatalities as a result of this incident."

B.C. Solicitor General Kash Heed, who flew to Revelstoke on Sunday, said because of the search volunteers, "we are fortunate that there weren't many more lives lost in this unfortunate incident."

Survivors have described a scene of chaos after the slide.

Moskaluk said RCMP believe the slide was triggered by high-marking, but he declined to directly blame the riders, who have not been identified, or say whether they are among the dead. Nor would he say whether they could face charges.

Rather, he said only that RCMP and the coroner's service are investigating.

The annual event - "big iron" sometimes refers to a snowmobile - is a gathering not sanctioned by any snowmobile club and involves different kinds of skills contests. High-marking isn't uncommon.

Some of those gathered on the mountain, possibly including children, were watching as what one witness called "those crazy guys" raced up the mountain.

Ben Bassaraba of Fernie, B.C., was recovering in hospital in nearby Kamloops on Sunday. He described being tossed 200 metres by the snow.

"I was eating a lunch with a buddy of mine, and I could hear - it sounded like thunder, pretty much, it was really loud. So I looked up and there it was coming and it was probably 30 feet high," he told Kamloops radio station CHNL.

He saw others being dragged under by the snow, just as he was eventually overtaken.

"Everybody I could see went under. It was so massive, there was nowhere you could go, anyways," Bassaraba said. "I should have been way down deep, I don't know how I ended up on top. I was lucky, but there's people less lucky, that's for sure."

Moskaluk said 19 of the 31 injured were released from hospital. Four were transferred to hospitals in Calgary, Kelowna, Kamloops and Vernon, B.C., for treatment of more serious injuries.

Two men who witnessed the avalanche said it hit so many people in part because a crowd stopped to watch the high-marking.

Steve Langevin, 38, said he thought the crowd was safe from the people he called "those crazy guys" because they were what seemed like kilometres away, but the wave of snow was so massive it easily reached them.

His friend, Pierre Beaudoin, 48, said the accident could have been prevented.

"We were watching, a whole bunch of people were parking there and then they were watching the high-mark. That's why everybody was stopped there."

He said it was irresponsible for the few snowmobilers to run up the mountainside in those conditions, especially with a number of them going up at the same time.

"The minute one makes it to the top, oh, the next guy, I could do it, and then it becomes stupid. And it was stupid, they were starting to come from the side, one's coming down and one's going up.

"Then everything started going crazy."

Despite previous backcountry tragedies, this latest slide shook the town and the entire backcountry community.

The Canadian Avalanche Centre had a warning out for the area this weekend that the risk of avalanche was "considerable."

Greg Johnson, of the Canadian Avalanche Association that runs the centre based in Revelstoke, said conditions in the B.C. backcountry have been "tricky" for the past six weeks, and got worse after a storm in recent days dumped a heavy load of snow on weak layers underneath.

The snow pack was stabilizing but was still "highly unstable" when the slide occurred.

"We continue to receive reports of avalanches being triggered this morning, so, the snowpack is still very unstable on a certain part of the terrain where avalanches have not run in the cycle," Johnson told reporters in Revelstoke.

Johnson avoided comment on whether the snowmobilers should have been there at all.

"We issue our bulletins daily, we update our bulletins daily from the avalanche centre. We also make efforts to send out special information, special avalanche warnings when conditions are conducive to higher risk. We did that the way we normally do," he said. "Whether these people had that information when they went into the mountains, I can't tell.

So far this year, there have been far fewer avalanche deaths compared to last winter when there were two dozen. One slide claimed the lives of eight snowmobilers near Fernie, B.C., in December 2008. There were 13 avalanche deaths the previous winter
For technical reasons that I really don't feel like elaborating upon, I became very tired of the website side of sugarloafers.com. It wasn't being used the way I felt it should have been, and doing certain things on it were a lot harder then they should have been. Hence the reason for the updated (more technically, completely new) Sugarloafers site.

Perhaps the biggest change is the addition of a photo gallery. With the new backend it is very easy for me to add pictures to the website, so please feel free to email pictures you have taken to me.

Henry Rivera and I rode Sherman on Saturday. Dug a path to the yurt, which is well supplied. Had lunch at the ranger station. Rode on to 108. Planned to take it on the return, but it was getting late, too late to get stuck. No sign of anyone else having been on that trail for who knows how long. Saw three sleds heading home while at the yurt.

Anyone going to Sherman next weekend?

my wife and I drove up today and tried to ride but the pow was too deep for her, she doesn't ride too well if she cant steer her sled with the skis. the pow was 1 1/2 ft to 2 ft deep and fairly heavy , I got stuck once about 2 miles in , I started to turn around and got stuck so I had to go 2 miles further to find a flatter spot, and thats all we rode , michele just couldn't steer, but had I been with someone who could atlas stay in my tracks we would have had a blast. there was no grooming and when I got back to my truck a sheriff was there getting ready to x country ski and he told me that there would be no more grooming this year, that the groomer is broke down and wont get repaired until the spring melt, that it will stay stuck in the snow.I didn't get the guys name but he is the one that patrols that area. nice guy. I will post a few photos later. that was a long trip for 8 miles total. oh well it was my first time in that area so that was cool.

2 plus feet new snow (CA cemet)starting at Sherman trail head.

Any new snow may cause trailhead to move to 7000 feet marker

Snowcat is down and buried one mile past Black on trail 111.

FS Bob will accept all comers to dig out snowcat Wednesday 3 march.

Snow is deep 8 feet at least on trails with few inches of crust ontop and many feet of powder underneath.

FS suggests only long tracks and experienced riders with present conditions

Robbie, Tim, Justin and I took a road trip up 395 and road 3 different areas on Friday through Sunday.

We rode from Bridgeport to the Historic town of Bodie and then to the Nevada state line. In some areas the snow was perfect and others it was wind blown. Friday was sunny to cloudy with no snowfall. We rod as high as 10,600 feet.

On Saturday we rode from Bridgeport West to 10,050 Ricky Peak. The snow was better as some of the areas are protected from the wind. The climbing was awesome for sure. It snowed off and on all day.

Sunday we rode closer to home and tore up the east side of 395 at Mammoth and never rode south of the rest area that's closed. We rode up to Bald Mountain lookout and through the trees. The traisl are groomed and in good shape with plenty of snow. We didn't ride the trails but a couple of miles but they were excellent. It was sunny in the morning and started to snow pretty good in the afternoon.

It was a great trip with great friends. Even Timmy!

SNOWFEST 2010

It it is with deep sorrow that SnowFest 2010 has to be rescheduled.

SnowFest 2010 is being rescheduled to Saturday, March 20, 2010.

The current winter storm here in Ponderosa is dropping one inch of snow per hour, have already gotten a foot of snow
and before this current storm finishes will end up with 1 1/2 to 2 feet of more snow.

The next storm is coming on Friday/Saturday and with my talks with NOAA this morning this next storm is to
be colder, lower elevations and more intense.

In the past CalTrans has stopped the buses at Pierpoint from coming up for a previous SnowFest event.

We are sorry for any and all inconveniences this will cause to all of you and we do look forwarding to seeing
you in March.

In that we do not know all who were coming, please contact others who might be coming up and
let them know about the reschedule.

Any questions, please contact me.

Rode Sherman Saturday and the snow is awesome. There is 6 feet at the summit. Bob and Eric started grooming Saturday and will finish up Monday. The trails are in great shape. The snow is stilll soft and deep off trail which makes for great boondocking. We rode to the Yurt and Don Brown and his dsughter was there from the West side and Mike Garland and his wife and son were there and came in from the East side. Mike reported unloading at Kennedy Meadows so the snow is low on that side.

Get out and ride and be safe.

Just returned from Mammoth..Nancy and I rode Friday and Saturday. The snow was GREAT and the weather was OUTSTANDING! (Sunny both days with about two to three inches of fresh snow between Fri night and Sat morning.

Met some locals who we assisted getting them un-stuck and rode with for the rest of the day.

We mainly rode the east side of the CA/395 which we were told by the locals was not very common to have such great conditions on the east side.

Hello, myself and others from so. cal. liked the old website much more. It was so much easier to navigate. We went up last Sunday and had the trails to our self. We haven't seen any new postings and can only assume that others feel the same. Also no trip reports, is no one riding or is it the website? How about pictures?

SOLD!

<strike>This is not your stock switchback. This sled was built professionally from the dealer. Tricityperformance.net located in Utah.
The motor was built by SLP startinglineproduts.com
Features.144" track, lefty throttle, SLP skies. The motor has been bored out to an 800cc with wiseco pistons.Ported and polished, SLP performance pipe. Skid plate, sure grip running boards. Clutch has been tuned to perform with this motor.
Low Low 850 miles.
Don't be fooled, this sled performs like a high performance road bike on the nastiest trails and climbs to the top off trail as well. You can run with the big boys on the straight aways and leave em in the snow dust in the corners on a light weight sled. The 1000cc sleds won't get away.
I will NOT sell this sled to an amateur rider.

I'm looking for others owning Polaris 600 CFI engines that have experienced repeated engine blowups. Two I know of in Bakersfield have blown four times in under one thousand miles. Another lost a crank. The engine obviously has an oiling problem. Polaris wants to repeatedly repair these sleds. Enough is enough. All they will say is they do not have a buyback program. Maybe it's time to start one. Anyone interested in joining a possible lawsuite please contact me at gmoses@globalfab.com
